Re:Bronto Headers - 2007/06/21 23:56 Black holes... Received another e-mail from Bronto (two in one day, rather tacky), this time promoting a Webinar. Sending IP of this one was 216.27.63.51. ReturnPath Sender Score for that IP is 60/100 with a reported accepted rate of 90.03%.

It was filtered by Postini, and I have my Postini spam filtering settings on their lowest settings.

X-pstn-disposition: quarantine

Black hole in terms of reporting, no doubt.

Perhaps content was the issue. Interesting that this message came from the ESP itself. Just skimming it, there was no plain text equivalent. Some ESPs won't even allow the send button to be hit without a plain text equivalent for html messages. Those are ESPs I'm more likely to trust.

Further, the html included the <style> tag. If memory serves me correctly, style tags can be an issue in some e-mail clients as far as not displaying the e-mail properly. And I also noticed hover in the CSS, which Outlook 2007 doesn't support, among others.

(On that topic, CampaignMonitor released A Guide to CSS Support in Email: 2007 Edition back in April. Overall, CampaignMonitor has great blog to read in terms of e-mail design, as many of their clients seem to be designers.)

I'm a part-time e-mail marketer and the ESP sender is the professional...

Maybe this post will draw someone from Bronto out of the woodwork :)

Re:Bronto Headers - 2007/06/22 17:45 Hello, this is Adam Covati from Bronto, you did manage to draw me out of the woodwork ;). I've been watching this spot for a little while now, just in case anybody had any questions.

Regarding the unsubscribe headers, we are actually in the testing phase on that and will be rolling it out to the app next week, so your inquiry couldn't be more timely. We are glad to roll that out as it will be helpful in reducing unwarranted spam complaints.

With respect to Postini, they're a fickle beast at best. I have found, as have others, that it can often be difficult to identify the exact reasons why emails get filtered. Postini does an amazing job with filtering spam, but they are also quite good at racking up false positives.

I have to admit you brought up some other good points on the content, we definitely slipped up. We keep a marketing calendar to help avoid over communicating with our recipients. There was a rush to get the email out and it appears we jumped the gun. I definitely appreciate your feedback, and have passed it along to our Marketing department. They agreed that there were some issues with that mailing, and that it was a bit below our standards.

Re:Bronto Headers - 2007/06/22 22:32 Adam,

Good to see some ESPs are listening to this board. Thanks for the clarifications.

Re:Bronto Headers - 2007/06/25 17:35 Thanks for posting, Adam! Great to see some additional ESP participation. I hope ESPs both respond to posts and chime in with thoughts and ideas. I think we're all eager to learn.

As someone on the receiving end of e-mails filtered by Postini, I'd say I have about one false positive a week out of 100-200/week legitimate external messages that do go through to my account, and one or two spam messages that get through which I do report back to Postini. I have all of my Postini filters set at their most lenient settings.

I think I'm going to keep posting headers, and I hope others will join me in that effort. Twice now (so far) we've pulled ESPs out of the woordowork :)

Re:Bronto Headers - 2007/06/25 17:51 freelance,

In the past I didn't make too many changes to my Postini filters, which may have explained the over-aggressive filtering. I was also lucky to not have an overly publicized address - though I did a fair bit of work with external groups, so my spam count was pretty low compared to my false positive count. Like I said, they do a good job, and certainly no one is perfect in the world of spam!

I'll be keeping an eye out for any other questions; if I have some for you guys I'll be sure to post here.

Take care,
Adam

This comment has stuck in my mind as an incredible display of honesty. I'm impressed.

What the heck, as long as you (Bronto) are monitoring this, any chance you have the ability to automate birthday e-mails, i.e. automatically queue up an e-mail with preset content that gets sent on someone's birthday (or a preset number of days before)? That's a feature I'd love to see, but am having a tough time finding anyone that offers it. Seems like a feature many users would enjoy.

Any unusual features offered by Bronto beyond the usual mantra of deliverability, reporting, managing lists, etc., that all ESPs seem to chant? I've seen some gems of ideas rarely offered by ESPs, and they really distinguish those ESPs in my mind.

Re:Bronto Headers - 2007/06/26 20:09 freelance,
It think it would be great for us to chat. Why don't you shoot me an email (adam at bronto); I'd really like to hear what you are thinking about.

And ruin my illusion of anonymity? ;)

Update on the Bronto headers: they do have unsubscribe info now, as Adam mentioned they would:

List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:[removed]@bounce.bm23.com>

By the way, Adam, the latest e-mail (a second reminder re: refer a friend and the flat panel monitor drawing) was given a low M score by Postini: M:81.4829 That's below the 85 threshold which usually gets such a message tossed in the Postini spam folder. (I have my Postini filters sent to lenient, as I mentioned, so this one sneaked through.)

Style tags in the message again, and still no plain text equivalent. What's up with that marketing department - I thought you tipped them off? ;)

Re:Bronto Headers - 2007/06/28 18:38 Yup, the unsub headers were added in and are working fine.

I took a stroll over to marketing and gave them a strong faced frown for not updating their template for the reminder message. It's funny, or perhaps more ironic, that this isn't top of mind for all marketers. It reminds me of a recent post I saw on imediaconnection: http://www.imediaconnection.com/content/15354.asp
Thanks for the update on Postini as well.

take care,
Adam
