Google and Postini - 2007/07/11 22:50 Google is acquiring Postini (communications security and compliance firm) for $625 million. (many sources - Google News search)

There's a lot of speculation as to what this means in terms of Google's aim at enterprise customers with Google Apps, etc. Postini is much more than just an anti-spam company.

I wonder on a more basic level what it will mean for Gmail and spam filtering. I don't get a lot of false positives with Postini filtering my e-mail (I've been impressed), but I get some. Postini's spam filtering may suddenly be reaching a much wider audience, including a consumer audience it probably doesn't touch much at this point in time.

It would also presumably be reaching a wider business audience, too. "Google claims at least 100,000 customers for its business software, though that number is unreliable because it hasn't been updated for more than six months. At least 1,000 new clients sign up for the package daily." (source)

Re:Google and Postini - 2007/07/12 17:47 This is interesting news. It looks like Google is really gunning for microsoft in a back door kind of way but I'm not exactly sure how the postini acquisition will affect email marketing. Any insight?
