Blacklists, WTF! - 2008/03/03 20:09 Being on a blacklist doesn't necessarily mean that you are a spammer. There are many reasons that you might find yourself on a blacklist. Unfortunately, many recipients today use the "Report as Spam" button as an unsubscribe mechanism today instead of unsubscribe links in emails. High bounce rates and poor list maintenance practices can also quickly tarnish your reputation as a sender and get you on a blacklist(s).

For a case study of an email marketer who tried to do all they could to safeguard their reputation and still found themselves on blacklists, read my blog post below:

Blacklists, WTF!
http://www.messagingtimes.com/blog/?p=1356

The fact is that legitimate senders need to hurdle those mechanisms created to reduce spam in our inboxes. Unfortunately, the 200 spam gangs that create 80 percent of worldwide spam aren't so affected by blacklists, as they could care less and know how to game the system (changing domains and IPs regularly, etc).

Bottom line: If you wind up on a black list or are getting blocked you either

A. have list problems
B. Someone who you share your IP address with has list problems.

Re:Blacklists, WTF! - 2008/03/04 18:29 The pipe is good. I think that you misunderstood my post. I mentioned that there are several problems (to include poor list maintenance) that will cause you to get on a blacklist. My point was that being on a blacklist doesn't mean that you are spamming.

Don't bogart that pipe.

Re:Blacklists, WTF! - 2008/03/06 17:36 It really depends on what blacklists you're talking about. You cannot simply lump all blacklists into one category. There are still blacklists being used in blacklist monitoring services that are either dead (i.e. TQMCube) or simply ineffective (i.e. SpamCannibal). You also have the incredibly reputable blacklists like any of the lists maintained by Spamhaus or Spamcop. These lists have been proven to be incredibly accurate and effective. I would recommend you take a look at Al Iverson's DNSBL website. Great information on blacklist reviews:
