Problem with link redirects in Gmail - 2008/03/13 00:27 Hi there

I've been having problems with some links in gmail lately. All links redirect through our server to enable click tracking but in gmail the redirect fails and the user is ending up on the google homepage. For some reason this only seems to affect links on images, links from text are not a problem.

I'm interested to know if any other email marketers have encountered this problem and whether there's anything that can be done to resolve it?

Cheers

Nick

Re:Problem with link redirects in Gmail - 2008/03/24 23:57 I think it has something to do with the unpublicized Google / Gmail virus. Obviously Google has been keeping a tight lip on it, but here's the deal, I have had it occur about 10 seconds after logging into Gmail on two different machines and there is no antivirus that can remedy the issue. basically, Google's servers were exposed to a trojan attack back around Thanksgiving 07 and it came in through Google's NOC and has been spreading via gmail accounts by simply logging in. Once the infection hits your machine, gmail starts acting very crazy, including what was spoken of in the beginning of this post, among other issues. The strangest thing is that your antivirus will find the virus but as soon as you go to remove it / quarantine it, it moves to another file randomly on your computer, basically being one step ahead of your anti virus all the time. The only fix is reformatting your PC and never logging onto gmail again if you want a clean PC. From what I have found though, this issue is not gmail wide, it seems to only be random gmail accounts, possibly all residing on the same server at Google HQ. I hope this helps you, another thing I have noticed is that if you are using anchor tags in an email creative in gmail and have spaces in the file name, the links will break....use underscores. At the end of the day, gmail is still a beta app even though it is widely used and these issues do unfortunately happen. Good luck!

Re:Problem with link redirects in Gmail - 2008/03/26 15:23 On a side note with GMAIL and links, if you use anchor tags, make sure that the name of your anchor tag is one word with no spaces. Doing some testing with anchor tags for a client, I noticed that some of the links would not go anywhere when clicked. After some comparing, I noticed that it was only the anchor tags that were "two words" that didn't work.

I have heard of the Google virus mentioned in this post and seen it first hand on a friends machine but there isn't much info on it out there.
