Preview Panes, Gmail Snippets - 2007/06/28 05:31
I generally start out my marketing e-mails with a graphic header. No "add to address book" or "click to view in browser" text before that.
I was looking over a test send and noticed that in the Gmail inbox the alt text for the header started off the text after the subject line, then the remaining snippet started in with the actual text of the e-mail. (If you had "add to address book" verbage, this is what would show up.)
I also noticed that my Outlook preview pane showed the alt text of the header image. I've noticed this before, but never thought much about it.
Until today. Then I thought, why not put something more enticing there? It can function as an extension of the subject line, to help draw the reader in.
Turns out it's not really a new idea, of course, but this CampaignMonitor blog post takes it even further by using a 1pixel by 1pixel image with alt text to force the issue for those marketers who don't usually start their messages out with an image. It's a useful technique.

I'm definitely going to make better use of this :)
