Isn't it just spam? - 2007/01/16 05:19 Firstly congrats on the site. I see it is well polished and I have always admired Joomla. Now down to business.

Email marketing? Isn't it just spam?

I am of the conviction mailing lists/newsletters/other should be opt-in. Unless I subscribe for something to be delivered to me I should not receive it.

The reason for this is simple. People will naturally opt-in on topics that interest them. People do not want to opt-out of everyone else. The 10 subjects that interest me are a minority to the million that do not.

Whilst I am sure many of you believe you are running a legitimate business, how many of you could defend this position? I don't mean any dis-respect to the legitimate contributors amongst you, but spam is one of the biggest issues facing the internet today.

How many of you think spam is a necessity? How many of you think so because the silver lining your pockets says so?

It is rare one gets the chance to converse with email marketers unless they are soliciting services, therefore I welcome the opportunity to put across my thoughts and welcome a response. Please do not consider this as trolling.

Re:Isn't it just spam? - 2007/01/16 06:39 I would also like to hear the answers to your questions.

Is spam even effective to get anything but page-hits?

When I get spam, I dismiss it as such no matter what the offer. Even if it's something I might be interested in, it's still spam, so I can't trust it. E-mail marketing seems useless to me, and it pisses people like me off to no end.

Re:Isn't it just spam? - 2007/01/16 15:55 I am of the mind set that opt-in is the best policy. However from a business stand point, there have been many case studies to suggest that unsolicited email works if it's very targeted and relavant to the receiver. Many legitimate US business practice unsolicited email either by purchasing or renting lists even though they don't want to admit it. The bottom line, if unsolicited email didn't work, spammers wouldn't bother doing it. There is no way to stop unsolicited email the way mail protocals are setup now.

Re:Isn't it just spam? - 2007/01/19 06:01 Call it what you want, but SPAMMERS know they are sending out SPAM. Legitimate organizations get a bad rap because of all of the bad seeds out there that don't comply to the laws and best practices. When I tell people that I am in the e-mail/interactive marketing business, they immediately say "oh you are a spammer". Right out of the gate I find myself defending what I do and have to explain the CAN SPAM Act, double opt-in lists, legitimizing the industry etc. etc.. It’s a pain in the tush to have to do that, however I believe in what I do, and I know that I am helping legitimate organizations get their messages out to their members/customers. We try as hard as we can to stay on top of all of our clients but occasionally someone will slip something through that’s “Spamish” and we deal with them accordingly (i.e. shutting down accounts, revoking lists, etc.) At the same time every correspondence that leaves our system has a legitimate CAN SPAM compliant opt-out at the bottom yet I still receive complaints from people who deem the message as SPAM.

I actually felt quite honored when one of the most notorious spammers (who’s name I will leave out of this post) approached us a few months back as a legitimate organization who wanted to use our system. If it wasn’t for the multi layered verification process that we have in place they may have slipped through cracks and been granted an account. When the signup came across my desk something looked suspicious so I went to my trusty google.com and put in the company name and the sign up’s name and came across some very interesting articles linking this person to some other spammers that had gotten in to some pretty bad trouble.

The bottom line is this, personally I think that anyone who makes money off of an obvious SPAM email campaign (and you know who you are) is a 100% criminal and ought to be banned from using a computer and or the internet forever. As for legitimate organizations that “some people” may label as spammers, click the opt-out at the bottom and go on reading your email.
